Featured App of the Week – Episode #3

Welcome back to the Featured App of the Week podcast. I’m Jason Rich.

The focus of today’s episode is on the Amazon mobile app for the iPhone. With the Covid-19 pandemic happening around the world, the majority of us are being told by local and federal government to stay at home and to visit retail stores as infrequently as possible.

The easiest way to do your shopping and to avoid going to retail stores, is to shop online. And as you probably know, the world’s largest online seller is Amazon.com.

Literally millions of products are available to Amazon customers, and using the Amazon mobile app on your iPhone, it’s never been easier and more convenient to find, purchase, and coordinate shipping for whatever you need to buy.

To get the most out of Amazon as a customer, seriously consider joining the company’s Amazon Prime service. The annual fee is $119.00.

In addition to offering unlimited 2-day shipping on all of your Amazon Prime orders throughout the year, Amazon Prime includes: unlimited access to the Amazon Prime Music and Amazon Prime Video streaming services, as well as discounts at Whole Foods supermarkets, for example.

Depending on where you live, some orders you place with Amazon via the Amazon mobile app are received within one day, and sometimes on the same day the order is placed.

The Amazon mobile app is available for free from the App Store. Once you install it, set up an Amazon account, or enter your existing Amazon account details, which includes your billing information and shipping address. Once this is entered, you never need to enter it again, which streamlines your ordering process in the future.

One Amazon shopping feature you can turn on from within the mobile apps is called 1-Click. This feature allows you to find the products you want to purchase and then place an order literally with a single on-screen tap.

You can adjust this setting by accessing the Amazon app’s menu option, tapping on the Your Account option, and then tapping on the 1-Click Setting option.

After setting up your account, you’re ready to shop, and the Amazon app makes it easy to find exactly what you’re looking for using your smartphone.

At the top of the screen, there’s a Search field. Simply type a product name or product category to see related listings for available products.

To the right of the Search field is a camera icon. Tap on this and then use your smartphone’s rear-facing camera to scan the UPC barcode for any product. The app will locate the product and display its listing on your iPhone’s screen.

Yet another option for locating a product is to tap on the Alexa icon to the right of the camera icon. Once you do this, simply speak to the app and say what items you’re looking for.

For example, you can say, “Bounty Paper Towels, 12 Roll Pack” or if you’ve ordered this item in the past, simply say, “Repeat my Bounty Paper Towers order.”

It’s also possible to browse product categories to find exactly what you’re looking for. To do this, tap on the Amazon Menu icon that’s located in the top-left corner of the screen, and then tap on the Shop By Department option.

You’ll discover dozens of different product categories, such as Appliances, Beauty, Clothing, Electronics, Office Products, and Pet Supplies.

While browsing through a product’s listing, you’ll see how much Amazon is selling the product for. However, you’ll often see that the same item is being sold by Amazon Sellers. These are independent companies that sell products online through the Amazon service and that adhere to all of Amazon’s policies.

One of the best reasons to shop from Amazon is the company’s return policy. For most items, you can return orders within 30 days very easily and with just a few on-screen taps.

You’ll discover that the Amazon mobile app for iPhone is an extremely convenient and quick way to shop for virtually all of your personal and household needs.

Keep in mind, however, that Amazon’s prices are not always the lowest. In some cases, you’ll be paying the suggested retail price for items, but experience the convenience of shopping with Amazon.

For household items or other types of products that you re-order periodically, Amazon allows you to save at least 5 percent off of each order if you set up a Subscription.

When you do this, you determine how much of the selected item you want and how often you want the order to automatically be placed and shipped. You can cancel a subscription at any time.

For higher ticket items, if you’re looking to pay the lowest price possible, consider using a free, online-based price comparison service to shop online and quickly compare prices amongst many online sellers.

Popular price comparison websites and mobile apps include: PriceGrabber.com, PriceRunner.com, ShopSavvy.com, and Google Shopping.

If you use a price comparison service, be sure to pay extra careful attention to the Seller Reviews and well as the Product Reviews that are published before placing your order.

That’s it for this week’s edition of the Featured App of the Week podcast. I’m Jason Rich. Thanks for listening.
