Featured App of the Week – Episode #14

Welcome back to the Featured App of the Week podcast. I’m Jason Rich.

A lot of people ask me…When is the best time to upgrade their Apple iPhone, and what should they consider when choosing to upgrade their smartphone? The focus of this episode is on what you should know when it comes to upgrading your iPhone.

Every Fall, Apple introduces at least one new iPhone model, along with a major upgrade to its iOS operating system. Each time new iPhone models are released, they tends to offer new technology to make them faster, more efficient, and capable of handling a wider range of tasks.

For example, the cameras built into the latest iPhone models are upgraded with new digital photography capabilities. Thus, if you take, edit, and share a lot of digital photos using your iPhone, upgrading to the latest model each year makes sense.

However, if you’re just an “average” iPhone user, chances are there’s no need to upgrade your smartphone every year whenever a new model is released.

In fact, you can typically wait until your smartphone is three to four years old before you need to consider upgrading.

That being said, however, all of the cellular service providers are in the process of launching a faster cellular data service, called 5G. It’s important to understand that 5G is vastly different from 5G-E, which is basically the same as 4G LTE service, but marketed differently.

As of Spring 2020, most cellular service providers in the United States, for example, currently offer 5G-E service for the iPhone.

When 5G service is released across the United States and around the world in 2020 and beyond, it will offer considerably faster Internet connectivity via your cellular service provider’s 5G wireless network.

To take advantage of this improved 5G service, you’ll need a smartphone with built in hardware that’s compatible with this new technology, and the iPhone 11 series, the latest iPhone SE, and the iPhone Xr, for example, are only 5G-E compatible, not 5G compatible.

As a result, if you want to begin taking full advantage of 5G service once it’s fully deployed, you will need to upgrade to a new iPhone model either later this year or in 2021.

While Apple plans to release what will likely be called the iPhone 12 in the Fall, the company has not yet officially announced whether or not this new smartphone will support 5G. In all likelihood it will, but until the new phone’s technical specifications are revealed, nobody knows for sure.

Based on this information, if you’re thinking about upgrading your iPhone in the very near future, my recommendation is to wait at least until Apple announces the new iPhones to be released in the Fall of 2020.

If the newest iPhones support 5G cellular service, definitely consider upgrading. If you upgrade your iPhone now, you’ll wind up with one of the phones in the iPhone 11 series, the iPhone SE, the iPhone Xr, or an older model that only supports the 5G-E cellular service, not the latest and fastest 5G service.

Thus, my recommendation is to wait to upgrade your smartphone until 5G service is offered by an iPhone, and your cellular service provider begins to offer 5G service where you live and work.

Another consideration you’ll need to make when upgrading your iPhone is its casing color. This is purely a matter of personal preference.

If you’ll ultimately keep your phone in a case, the color iPhone casing you choose is not really important, because you won’t see the sides and back of the phone while it’s in a case.

Two more important considerations, however, are the iPhone’s screen size and internal storage capacity. Apple typically offers two different screen size options and three storage capacity options for each new iPhone model.

For example, the iPhone 11 series phones that were released in 2019, offered either a 5.80-inch or 6.5-inch Super Retina XDR display. As for internal storage capacity, your options included 64 gigabytes, 256 gigabytes, or 512 gigabytes.

As for which screen size to choose, this too is a matter of personal preference, although if you have eyesight issues, you’ll likely appreciate the larger size screen that’s offered.

In regard to internal storage capacity, I typically tell average iPhone users to choose the middle option that’s offered.

This will give you plenty of storage space for all of your apps, data, documents, files, and photos, for example.

However, if you store a lot of high-definition digital photos or high-definition videos within your iPhone, consider choosing the most storage capacity available, since HD video that you shoot yourself, or that you download from the Internet in the form of movies and TV shows, for example, take up a lot of storage space.

In the past, the internal storage space of an iPhone was not upgradable after the phone was purchased. While this is still true, thanks to iOS 13 and later versions of the iOS operating system, it’s now possible to insert a tiny flash drive into the port on the bottom of the smartphone and use it as an external storage option for data, documents, files, and photos, for example.

A company called SanDisk offers a lineup of tiny flash drives, called iXpand, specifically for the various iPhone models. These offer up to 256 gigabytes of additional storage space. You’ll find a link to this company’s website in the episode notes for this podcast.

Regardless of which iPhone model you choose, make sure you keep the iOS operating system and all of your apps up-to-date by downloading and installing the most current version. You can do this for free directly from your phone when it’s connected to the Internet.

To update the iOS operating system, connect your iPhone to a Wi-Fi hotspot for Internet access. Next, launch the Settings app from the Home screen. From the Settings menu, tap on the General option, and then tap on the Software Update option.

I recommend turning on the Automatic Updates option. If an iOS update is available, tap on the Download and Install option. The iOS update process will take anywhere from five to 15 minutes.

To download the latest versions of the apps you currently have installed on your iPhone, from the Home screen, launch the App Store app. Next, tap on your photo or initials that are displayed in the top-right corner of the screen, if you’re running iOS 13 or later.

From the Account screen, place your finger near the center of the screen and swipe downwards to update the information. Next, tap on the Update All option that’s displayed about halfway down the screen. This option will only be active if one or more of your apps requires an update. Internet connectivity is required to update your apps.

It’s a good idea to check for new app updates at least one per week to ensure you’re always running the latest versions of the apps you rely on the most.

Ultimately, when it comes time to decide whether or not you want to upgrade your iPhone, Apple, as well as most cellular service providers offer two main options.  You can purchase the phone outright and own it, or you can choose a rent-to-own option for the phone that requires you pay a monthly fee for up to two years. This rental fee is for the phone and is separate from your monthly cellular phone service bill.

If you rent the phone, you can trade it in each year for the latest model. However, if you keep paying for the same phone for two years, you’ll ultimately own it.

Regardless of which purchase option you choose, plan on spending anywhere from $1,000 to $1,500 for the latest and most advanced iPhone model.

Before agreeing to an upgrade, make sure you understand all of the terms and conditions, as well as the cost for the phone itself, and any potential price changes that will impact your monthly cellular phone service.

That’s it for this edition of the Featured App of the Week podcast. Thanks for listening. I’m Jason Rich.
